When is the best time to go fishing in Cozumel?

That is a complicated question and depends upon two things: the type of fishing you'd like to do and the kind of fish you'd like to catch!  Cozumel does not have regulated fishing seasons, which means you can try to fish for whatever species you would like, whenever you'd like.  However, many species are migratory and follow the water temperatures.  So, while Cozumel doesn't regulate fishing seasons, the fish, themselves, determine their season!  Remember, the lists below are examples...there are no guarantees in fishing!

  • Bottom Fishing is a year round activity in Cozumel.  You can catch Grouper, Yellowtail Snapper, Triggerfish, Jack, Barracuda, Red hinds, and Cabrilla.  These fish, and more, are present in the reef all year long which is why bottom fishing can be so fun ...you never know what you may get!  It's also a great activity for a family with children.  â€‹

  • Deep Sea Fishing is also a year round activity, but you may choose a season that best fits the type of fish you would like to catch.  The following species may be found during the listed seasons:

  • Fall/Winter:

    • Wahoo, Kingfish, Mackerel, Grouper, Barracuda, Tuna, and Mullet.

  • Spring/Summer:

    • Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Bonito, Tuna, Billfish, Sailfish, and Mahi-Mahi.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes, you do, but we will handle the details for you.  The price is included in the trip.

Can I take my catch home with me?

You can, but with increased security restrictions, it is not very practical.  There is no dry ice or commercial packing facilities on Cozumel and there are restrictions for certain seafood imports.  Finally, if you are on a cruise ship you will not be allowed to bring your catch onto the ship.

Instead, we suggest take your catch to a local restaurant, or your hotel and have them cook it up for you.
